Creating a Group
You can group shapes and/or instances together to manipulate the objects together, rather than individually. As an owner, a group has an area boundary object that conforms to the bounding box of the entire group, which is the composite of all the bounding boxes of the members of the group. This area boundary is automatically created, edited, and deleted by the Group command as objects are added to or deleted from the group.
A group has the following characteristics:
- Is a named database figure, which you can query in the database.
- Can contain any number of figures or instances, including other groups. It may have an applied constraint group.
- Is selectable and has an origin and an orientation.
- Does not have a layer/purpose or connectivity, though its members may.
-
In the layout window, choose Create – Group.
The Create Group form opens. -
Optionally, name the group by typing the name in the Name field.
The group is automatically named; the first group is namedGroup0and as groups are added, the number increments by one. - Optionally, choose the orientation from the Orientation list.
- On the canvas, click the objects that you want to add to the group.
-
Click Apply in the form.
The group is created. When you place the mouse pointer over a group, a dotted line surrounds the objects in the group.
Use the Edit – Group command to add an object to a group, remove an object from a group, or ungroup a group of objects. To edit the properties of objects in a group, use the Edit – Properties command.
