Creating an Area Boundary

Area Boundary is a generic boundary in a physical block. It is used to indicate a region of a block for various purposes defined by a design methodology, thus each area boundary has a unique name. You can tie an area boundary to a constraint group that can direct advanced placement and routing solutions.

To create an area boundary:

  1. In the layout window, choose Create – P&R Objects – Area Boundary.
  2. Press F3 to open the Create Area Boundary form.
  3. Assign a name to the area boundary in the Name field. The name must be unique to the cellview.
The software automatically assigns names beginning with AB (for area boundary), followed by an underscore and a number, to make the name unique to the cellview.
  4. Select Create as ROD Object if you want to create the area boundary as a ROD object. The Name field becomes editable, allowing you to change the name from the default.
  5. Select Soft Fence if you want to create the soft fence.
Objects enclosed by the area boundary with a soft fence are compacted relative to each other as well as compacted as an entity relative to objects outside the boundary.
  6. From Create Method choose a method and then create the area boundary on the canvas:
    • From Selected Set
Select From Selected Set. Then, select objects on the canvas to add to the selected set. Once you have selected the objects, click the Apply button in the form to create the area boundary.
    • Rectangle
Select Rectangle. Then, specify a rectangle area on the canvas for the boundary. The Apply button field is grayed out when using this method.
    • Polygon
Select Polygon and select a snap mode in the form. Then, specify a polygon area on the canvas for the boundary. The Apply button is grayed out when using this method.
